Hainan Airlines Company Limited (HNA) is an airline headquartered in the HNA Development Building in Haikou, Hainan, People's Republic of China. Hainan Province is the largest special economy zone in China. The airline is the largest privately-owned air transport company and the fourth-largest airline in terms of fleet size in the People's Republic of China. Its main base is Haikou Meilan International Airport, with hubs at Beijing Capital International Airport, Xi'an Xianyang International Airport, Taiyuan Wusu Airport and Urumqi Diwopu International Airport. Founded in 1993, Hainan Airlines carries more than 14 million passengers annually and flies to more than 60 domestic and international cities, including the capitals of every Chinese province. Hainan Airlines’ international flight destinations include Budapest, Brussels and St. Petersburg, with most recent additions being new services to Berlin, Taipei, Luanda, Moscow, Dubai and Seattle.
On November 30, 2007, the four airlines under HNA group, Hainan Airlines, Shanxi Airlines, Chang'an Airlines, and China Xinhua Airlines, merged into Grand China Air which will be the fourth-largest airline in China. Grand China Air is under a newly-formed parent company called Grand China Airlines Holding CO which is held jointly by Hainan province government (48.6%), US billionaire George Soros (18.6%), and HNA group (32.8%).
