Environmental and Social Responsibility

We at Hahnair commit to assuming responsibility for our impact on the environment and on society. We therefore believe that it is our duty to invest in a sustainable future and support social projects benefitting our local community and people in need around the world.

Our Environmental Initiatives

Reforestation activities in Kenya, Madagascar and Mexico

To mitigate climate change, Hahnair partners with veritree, a technology platform enabling and tracking global restoration projects. Hahnair committed to restoring coastal mangrove forests in Kenya and Madagascar by planting 150,000 trees which equals an area of 15 hectares (37 acres).

The Hahnair tree population, once matured, will sequester for an average of 32,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide.

In addition, Hahnair cooperates with Your Forest, a reforestation project in Mexico, and committed to planning 80,000 trees with an investment of 40,000 EUR. After 5 years, each tree will compensate for 10 KG CO2 per year which totals to 800t CO2 per year for the next 20 years.

Sustainability focus of office operations

Hahnair is engaging in a number of sustainability initiatives designed to reduce our carbon footprint. This involves reducing the carbon emissions caused by our office operations and our business travel activities. All employees together make an effort to make significant contributions to a more sustainable work-environment. We already reduced our office space, share desks, implemented a responsible heating concept and rely 100% on green energy.

In addition, we offer free loading stations for electric cars and a sustainable lunch concept. We are currently working on a new business travel scheme and are planning a yearly clean-up day with environment-focused activities on 16th of September each year.

Our Social Initiatives

Hahnair Foundation

The Hahnair Foundation was founded by Hahnair in 2012. The Foundation’s mission is to support initiatives  that fight hardships such as poverty, oppression, hunger and disease, especially related to women and children. Hahnair ensures that 100% of all donations go to the Foundation’s supported projects.

Key focal points in the selection of our projects are, above all, improvements in education which are to help those affected find a way out of the vicious circle of poverty and social decline.

Furthermore, we support issues including health, essential infrastructure, as well as microcredit organisations, the latter of which is particularly for women.

Groundbreaker Talents

We also participate in Groundbreaker Talents, a scholarship programme for young female IT talents in Uganda from financially constrained communities.

Groundbreaker Talents strives to provide full-time residential scholarships in Software Engineering tailored to enable young women from financially constrained communities to leverage their full potential and access a brighter future in the digital era.

Groundbreaker Talents is committed to more than just teaching coding; their goal is to thoroughly train women, ensuring they bring substantial value to every employer they work with.

We have taken over one sponsorship and mentorship, overseen by our IT department colleagues Tanmayee and Sebastian.

Die Ofenmacher

We sponsor Die Ofenmacher e.V. in Nepal to combat indoor air pollution from open-fire cooking. Open cooking produces high levels of household air pollution with a range of health-damaging pollutants, including small soot particles that penetrate deep into the lungs.

In poorly ventilated dwellings, indoor smoke concentration can be 100 times higher than acceptable levels for fine particles. Exposure is particularly high among women and young children, who spend the most time near the domestic hearth.

The project builds smoke-free ovens from local materials, reducing accidents, health risks, and CO2 emissions. These ovens improve kitchen cleanliness and create local jobs, while families contribute to and assist in their construction.
